Shizuka Ishikawa

The 'silver' laureate (besides the main three prizes, this edition introduced gold, silver, and bronze medals for the winners), Shizuka Ishikawa (b. 1954 in Tokyo), was the favourite with the competition audiences. Was it because she was the first Japanese to take part in the event? She was nevertheless awarded a prize for the best performance of Concerto (No. 1) by Karol Szymanowski. She studied at the Academy of Music in Prague. Since then she has led intense concert life and made numerous recordings - particularly for Czech record companies.
