Gerhard Schulz

Gerhard Schulz was born in 1951 in Linz (Austria) into a family of musicians and studied with Franz Samohyl in Vienna, Sándor Végh in Düsseldorf and Shmuel Ashkenasi in the USA.

He was a founding member of the Salzburg String Trio, the Schulz Ensemble and first violinist of the Düsseldorf String Quartet. As a member of the world-famous Alban Berg Quartett for over 30 years, he played regularly in the most important music centres of the world. As exclusive artists, the quartet recorded most of the repertoire for EMI Records and received numerous awards for it.

After the ABQ stopped playing in the summer of 2008, Gerhard Schulz founded the Waldstein Ensemble (a piano quartet) and enjoys a busy life as a performer as well as a teacher.

In 2009 he made his debut as a conductor with the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since 1980 he has been professor of violin at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and from 1993 to 2012 guest professor of chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik in Cologne (Germany).

From 2012 until 2016 he was also teaching chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik in Stuttgart.
