Sleeplessness Festival | Poznan, May 22-27

Out-of-the-obvious performances of works by Krzysztof Penderecki, Radiohead, Kora Jackowska or Henryk Wieniawski awaited the participants of the Sleeplessness Festival (22-27.05.) in Poznan. The festival was a 5-day journey into original interpretations of well-known works of classical and popular music in the beautiful White Hall of the Bazar Poznanski Hotel. The festival featured Atom String Quartet, FudalaRot Duo, Andrzej Cieplinski and Tymoteusz Bies, Bartek Wąsik and Michal Pepol.

The festival was held at a venue where Henryk Wieniawski himself has performed many times.

All concerts were streamed on the Wieniawski Society's YouTube channel (video players also below)

Dawid Lubowicz – violinist
Mateusz Smoczyński – violinist
Michał Zaborski – violist

Atom String Quartet ranks among the world's most intriguing string quartets and Poland's top jazz performers. The ensemble blends the potential of the string quartet with improvisation in the broadest sense. Their work - in addition to jazz - is inspired by Polish folklore, music from various regions of the world, as well as contemporary and classical music.

In Poznan, the musicians will present arrangements of Wieniawski's Souvenirs, including the "Souvenir de Posen," written at the organizers' request. It was the White Hall of the Bazar Poznański, among other venues, that Henryk Wieniawski himself performed in during his numerous concert tours.

Wojciech Fudala & Michał Rot | 24.05. 8:00 pm

Wojciech Fudala – cellist
Michał Rot – pianist

The artists will perform music from their latest album "Transfiguration," which includes innovative arrangements of works by Karol Szymanowski, Rebecca Clarke and Ernst Bloch in transcriptions for cello and piano. The album has been nominated for the 2023 Fryderyk Awards in the "Chamber Music Album of the Year - Duets" category.

FudalaRot Duo was created in 2016 by cellist Wojciech Fudala and pianist Michał Rot. The artists were brought together by the need to promote the work of Polish composer Mieczyslaw Wajnberg. This meeting resulted in their premiere album featuring Wajnberg's sonatas for cello and piano, released in 2019 by DUX. The album received excellent reviews around the world, and was also nominated for a Fryderyk Award in the "chamber music" category. This is the first Polish recording of a composition by Wajnberg for cello and piano.

Bartek Wąsik | 26.05. 8:00 pm

Bartek Wąsik – pianist, composer and arranger

"Daydreamer" features twelve original arrangements of songs by the band Radiohead for solo piano, which together create a fresco full of meanings and colors. It is a very personal musical statement by Bartek Wąsik, one of Poland's leading pianists, as well as composer and arranger, an artist who crosses the boundaries of sound in his work. These awe-inspiring arrangements are a testimony to his love for Radiohead songs. As he confesses, the English group has accompanied him for years at important life events. "They are fertile soil from which I draw my own sensitivity," he stresses. They put me in a light vibration, they do not give me peace. They open up a world of associations that I wanted to share."

Michał Pepol | 27.05. 8:00 pm

Michał Pepol - cellist, composer and producer

"Kora nieskończoność" is the solo phonographic debut of Michal Pepol, cellist and composer. He composed the album between 2019 and 2020, using private, unknown to the world, never-released phonographic materials by Kora Jackowska, which he received from Kamil Sipowicz. The intriguing yet challenging process of recovering the recordings from the recovered 24-track studio tapes, which were often barely legible, required an incredible amount of energy. The album is made up of arrangements and remixes of existing songs, but above all, completely new songs, combining pop, rock, classical music, one-of-a kind audio play and avant-garde alternative.
