RULES AND REGULATIONS


15th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition, which is organised by Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań, is open to violin players of all nationalities born in years 1986-2000.

DATES

Competition dates: 8-23 October 2016
Competition application deadline: 31 December 2015
Preliminary selection sessions: February – May 2016
Confirmation of admittance to competition: 30 June 2016
Payment of entrance fee: by 15 July 2016
Registration at competition office: 8 October 2016 by 2:00 p.m.
Prize-Giving Ceremony and Laureate Concert: 23 October 2016


CONDITIONS FOR PARTICIPATION

Candidates shall be qualified for the competition subject to preliminary selection auditions attended by the chairman of the jury, Maxim Vengerov.

Prior to taking part in the preliminary selection, the candidate is requested to submit the following documents in WORD or PDF formats to the competition office at the e-mail address violin@wieniawski.pl:

1. completed application form,

     deadline: December 31, 2015


2. artistic CV (max. of 1800 characters),
3. two current photographs: an en face portrait and a full-body photograph (10x15 cm, resolution of 300 dpi),
4. scan of a document with photograph (passport or ID document) to confirm the candidate’s identity and date of birth.

All candidates shall receive electronic confirmation of application submission, which is tantamount with registration of the candidate for preliminary selection audition at a location indicated in the application form.

 Incomplete submissions shall not be processed.

Submission of a completed and signed application form is tantamount with candidate’s agreement to participate in the competition and accept all terms of its Rules and Regulations.

Sequence of performances

Prior to competition auditions, participants admitted to the event shall draw numbers to determine the sequence of their performances in particular stages. The draw will be held on 8 October 2016.

No. of participants in particular stages of competition:

Twenty-four participants who receive the highest scores in auditions of stage 1 shall qualify for stage 2 of the competition.
Twelve participants who receive the highest combined score in auditions of stages 1 and 2 shall qualify for stage 3 of the competition.
Six participants who receive the highest combined score in auditions of stages 1, 2 and 3 shall qualify for the final stage of the competition.


PRELIMINARY SELECTION

The aim of preliminary selection process is to select a maximum of 50 participants who will be admitted to stage 1 of the competition.

Preliminary selection programme:

1. F. Mendelssohn-Bartholdy: 1st movement of Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64 (with piano)
2.
J. Brahms: 1st movement of Sonata no. 2 in A major, Op. 100, or C. Franck: 3rd movement of Sonata in A major
3.
H. Wieniawski: Capriccio no. 3 or 4, Op. 18
4.
N. Paganini: one of the Capriccios, Op. 1

In exceptional cases, when for justifiable reasons a candidate shall not be able to personally attend a preliminary selection session, on approval of the director of competition the candidate may be allowed to submit at his own expense a DVD recording of the preliminary selection programme.

The HD recording must be unedited and the candidate must be filmed in frontal position at a maximum distance of 5 m.

Competition organizers reserve the right to reject recordings which do not fulfil the above requirement.

The recording is non-returnable.


ENTRANCE FEE

By 15 July 2016, a candidate admitted to the competition is requested to remit an entrance fee of 100 Euro to the following bank account:

Entrance fee is non-refundable should the candidate withdraw from the competition.


PROGRAMME

The competition consists in four stages open to the public.

Except for sonatas in stages 1 and 2, the programme of the competition involves performance from memory of the following compositions:

Stage 1

1. L. van Beethoven: one movement (indicated by the jury1) of a sonata for violin and piano
2. H. Wieniawski – one of the Capriccios, Op. 10
3. H. Wieniawski – one of the following compositions:
Polonaise in D major, Op. 4
Variations on an Original Theme, Op. 15
Scherzo-Tarantella in G minor, Op. 16
Fantasy on Themes from Ch. Gounod’s Opera “Faust”, Op. 20
Polonaise in A major, Op. 21

4. One of the following compositions:

H. W. Ernst – Grand Caprice on Schubert’s Der Erlkönig, Op. 26
H. W. Ernst – Variations on The Last Rose of Summer
N. Milstein – Paganiniana
K. Penderecki – La follia*
E. Ysaÿe – Sonata no. 3 in D minor, Op. 27 Ballade; Sonata no. 6 in E major, Op. 27

5. K. Szymanowski – one of the following compositions:

Romance in D major, Op. 23

Myths, Op. 30:

Participant may select any of the available cadences. He/she is also entitled to perform own cadence.

3. J. S. Bach – one movement of any of the sonatas and partitas2 for solo violin (duration of up to 4 minutes)

2In the case of Partita in B minor, the movement selected should be performed with the relevant double.

PRIZES

The total prize money awarded in the competition is 100,000 Euro.

Distribution of prizes remains competence of the jury.

The organiser warrants that the total amount of prize money shall remain unchanged, and the 1st prize shall be not lower than 30,000 Euro (gross).

According to Polish tax regulations, all cash prizes are subject to 10% tax to be transferred by competition organiser.

Prize winners have the right to use the title of “Laureate of 15th International Henryk Wieniawski Violin Competition in Poznań”.

All other cash and non-cash prizes endowed by individuals and institutions should be reported to the secretariat of the competition prior to commencement of the event. When approved by the secretariat, these prizes shall receive the status of extra-statutory distinctions. Cash prizes shall be paid in the currency in which they were deposited by the contributor.

The organiser also plans to award Critics’ Prize and Youth Jury Prize.


JURY

The jury shall be chaired by Maxim Vengerov.

Composition of the international jury shall be announced prior to the opening of the competition.

Decisions of the jury are final and non-appealable. Detailed principles of its proceedings are contained in Rules and Regulations of the Proceedings of the Jury.


PIANISTS, ORCHESTRAS

Competition organiser provides pianists during preliminary selection auditions.

During the competition, prior to each stage of the event, participants are entitled to one free-of-charge rehearsal with the competition pianist.

Participants are entitled to bring their own pianists to preliminary selection audition and to the competition.

In Stage 3 of the competition, participants shall perform with Amadeus Polish Radio Chamber Orchestra conducted by Agnieszka Duczmal. All participants will be granted the same number of rehearsals with Amadeus Orchestra.

In Stage 4 of the competition and during a Gala Concert, participants shall perform with T. Szeligowski Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra. Each participant of the final stage shall perform two selected concertos within one day of auditions. All participants will be granted the same number of rehearsals with the Poznań Philharmonic Orchestra.


PRIZE-WINNER CONCERT

Prizes and distinctions shall be presented to winners during a Gala Concert which closes the competition. Winners are obliged to personally collect the prize.

During the concert, the winner of the 1st prize shall perform one of the stage 4 concertos with orchestra. Winners of the remaining prizes shall play compositions for solo violin, violin and piano or violin and orchestra, according to a programme determined by the jury in consultation with prize winners.

The musical part of the Prize-Winner Concert will be repeated on 25 October 2016 in Wrocław, the 2016 European Capital of Culture.

Prize-winners, whose appearance in both concerts is mandatory, shall not be paid separate fee for their performance in the said concerts.


VENUES

The Opening Concert, auditions of all four stages of the competition, and the Prize-Winner Concert shall be held at A. Mickiewicz University Auditorium in Poznań.

The organiser provides free-of-charge rehearsal rooms located at I. J. Paderewski Academy of Music in Poznań.


COPYRIGHT

Participants of the competition transfer free of charge to Henryk Wieniawski Musical Society of Poznań their property rights to artistic performances recorded at all stages of the competition and the Prize-Winner Concert, in the scope of their:

a/ recording,
b/ multiplication on all carriers of sound and image,
c/ marketing,
d/ uploading to computer memory and rendering available on the Internet,
e/ public reproduction,
f/ screen showing,
g/ lease and rental,
h/ wireless, cable and satellite broadcasting and re-broadcasting.

Participants of the competition also grant their permission to publish their images recorded in connection with the competition and assigned to the competition organizer.

Participants grant their permission to have their personal data processed for the purposes of organisation of the competition, and in accordance with the statutory goals of the event organizer.


INSURANCE AND OTHER DOCUMENTS

Participants and their pianists are obliged to take out insurance on persons and instruments for the duration of the competition.

Should a participant bring a historical instrument (i.e. one whose age is 55 years or older) to the competition, he/she is obliged to report it to customs authorities upon crossing the Polish border.

Should a participant use a hired instrument of considerable value, he/she should carry a document to certify his/her right to use it.


ACCOMMODATION, TRAVEL

During preliminary selection auditions, the organiser does not provide accommodation to candidates and their pianists, and does not grant reimbursement of any cost incurred.

The organizers provide participants of the competition and their pianists with free accommodation at competition hotel (incl. breakfast) for the period of their participation in the event, i.e. at the following dates:

7-14     October 2016 – for participants of stage 1 of the competition,
13-17   October 2016 – for participants of stage 2 of the competition,
16-20   October 2016 – for participants of stage 3 of the competition,
19-25   October 2016 – for participants of stage 4 of the competition.
